What is Dermoid Cyst?

Dermoid Cysts are the Non-Cancerous Cysts which may appear on the different parts of body. These cysts contain grown up tissues so they are not dangerous in nature.

What Dermoid Cyst Contains?

These cysts appear under the Skin surface and contain Tissues, Sweat Glands, Blood, Bone, Cartilage, Fat and Hair Follicles in it.

Dermoid Cyst is also known as Benign Cystic Tertomas. Sometimes it gives rise to Squamous Cel Carcinoma in adults and Endodermal Sinus Tumor in children.

Location of Dermoid Cyst

Dermoid Cyst can be found both in the outer and inner regions of the body. They can appear in the areas like Face including Eyelid, Eyebrows and Nose. They can also be found on Neck, Back and behind Ears etc.

Dermoid Cyst in the Eye region causes the sight problems.

Internally, these cysts can be found in the Skull, Spine, Abdomen and on Ovary.

Shape and Size of Dermoid Cyst

Dermoid Cysts are small-sized round-shaped sacs of about 0.5cm in diameter. They mostly have firm shape.

These cysts can get enlarge at the later stages up to the 45 cm or 17 inches in size.

Growth of Dermoid Cyst

The growth of these cysts is very slow due to this reason the patients do not notice it. Patients seek treatment when these cysts are grown and they become large in size.

Causes of Dermoid Cyst

The causes of Dermoid Cysts are not very clear yet. It is believed that these cysts appear due to Congenital Defect.

Congenital Defect passes from parents to the next generation through genes. It can cause skin problems in the development of Fetus.

Symptoms of Dermoid Cyst

Dermoid Cysts do not show any symptoms at the early stages. It shows symptoms at the later stages when the cyst grow larger.

    Round Sacs or lumps are formed on the Skin.

  2. Pain

    The Dermoid Cysts are usually painless. Sometimes they get painful, if the cyst is rupture or it is twisted.  If the pain becomes unbearable, the patients should see a doctor for checkup.

  3. Color

    Most of the time the color of Dermoid Cyst is same Skin tone sometimes it can be of Yellow Color.

  4. Movement

    The cyst may move, if it is touched with fingers.

  5. Ovarian Swelling

    Dermoid Cysts can appear in the Ovaries in the reproductive years. Sometimes these cysts become cancerous but it is very rare. About 1-2 % Dermoid Cysts of Ovaries becomes Cancerous.

These cysts are filled different types of Cells and Fatty fluids.

Diagnosis of Dermoid Cyst

A proper checkup from an expert physician is required before the start of treatment. The physician first of all takes the medical history of the patient.

If a cyst is found on the neck or head, then tests like MRI and CT Scan is done to know, if these cysts are linked to the head or neck tissues or not.

Treatment of Dermoid Cyst

For the investigation of Dermoid Cyst Ultrasound is used. This investigation shows how much tissues are linked with the tissues.

A Sonogram is used to check, if any sinus tract is close to the cyst.

Biopsy is done for the treatment of these cysts. Special operations are done for the biopsy of cysts located in the skull, spine, abdomen and ovaries. Specimen is taken and is tested in the laboratory for the presence of cancer. These parts of body are cured in this way.

Dermoid Cyst Removal

The success of cyst removal depends on the precision of treatment. If the cyst removal surgery is not done by the skilled hands then the cyst can recur again.

Dermoid Cyst and Fertility

There is a misconception that if there is Dermoid Cyst in the ovaries, it affects the fertility of women but there is nothing like this. When the cyst is removed properly from the Ovaries, the women get Pregnant and it is found that the health of the baby is normal. There is no case of infertility found after the treatment of the Dermoid Cyst.
