Urban areas though providing us with lots of leisure and access to the modern advancement in every field of life yet they have always being associated with different health issues and recently the researchers have found a new thing.
Researchers from the University of Dusiburg-Essen in Germany found that people who live in urban areas where particular air pollution tends to be quite high tend to have higher blood pressure as compared to those who live in the areas of low pollution.
In this research the researchers have particularly used the data from Heinz Nixdorf Recall Study in which 5,000 individuals were studied and the focus was on the development of heart diseases.
While talking about this study Barbara Hoffman, M.D., M.P.H., head of the Unit of Environmental and Clinical Epidemiology, University of Duisburg-Essen, and senior author of the study said that “Our results show that living in areas with higher levels of particle air pollution is associated with higher blood pressure”. It was found that arterial blood pressure rose by 1.7 mmHg for an increase of 2.4 µg/m³ in the exposure level to fine particulate matter that mostly comes from different combustion sources of urban areas.
Another statement regarding such findings came from Dr Goffman and according to that “This finding points out that air pollution does not only trigger life threatening events like heart attacks and strokes, but that it may also influence the underlying processes, which lead to chronic cardiovascular diseases. It is therefore necessary to further our attempts to prevent chronic exposure to high air pollution as much as possible.” So the new disaster of urban areas have been discovered and which is affecting the lives of countless people.
