Hemorrhoids or piles is swollen, inflammated veins around the anus or lower rectum. The general cause is excessive stress and pressure on the rectal veins and valves. This causes the muscle that support the hemorrhoidal vessels to weaken resulting in a sac like protrusion inside the rectal canal or outside under the skin around the anus.
Hemorrhoids can occur at any age but is noticed more amongst young women, pregnant women and people suffering from restricted bowel movement and prolonged constipation. Excessive drinking of alcohol and caffeine can also cause hemorrhoids. It can also be caused by people suffering from diarrhoea and obesity.
• Fibrous fruits and roughage should be major ingredients in diet to lessen the rectal pressure and smoothen bowel movement
• Sitz baths several times a day in plain warm water for 10 minutes can be helpful
• Application of gel or cortisone ointment on the affected area often helps assuage the pain
• The vein walls can be strengthened by taking herb and dietary supplements
• Application of natural astringents such as Cranesbill, Aloe vera and honey
• Drinking plenty of liquids can help in preventing hemorrhoids
• Avoid sitting in the toilet long as it pressurises the rectal veins
• Anal area to be kept clean and washed with warm water regularly to help reduce hemorrhoids
Practicing these will not make hemorrhoids disappear but would definitely relieve the symptoms and prevent it from further aggravating. In extreme cases it is advisable to visit the doctor.
