The high heels, one of the most favorite items for the fashion conscious ladies are not completely good for you, the medical experts have always warned about the drastic affects of high heels and there are many researches on this issue as well.

High HeelsNarici from Manchester Metropolitan University has worked on this issue and she has reported that due to consistent wearing of high heels something really changes inside your feet, as she has notified that secretaries in the 1950s have always complained about the discomfort when they took off their heels and walk on the flat shoes.

At the same time Robert Csapo, from the University of Vienna, Austria, was visiting Narici’s Active Lifespan Lab, so Narici and Costis Maganaris asked Csapo to test the theory.

Just for testing this theory the calf muscles of the ladies who wear high heels were measured via MRI and no particular difference was found when compared with the ladies wearing flat shoes.

Then the Muscle fibers of the ladies were measured and here the change was captured, due to the consistent wearing of high heels the muscle fibers gets shrunk. According to Narici “We were expecting slightly smaller muscle volumes in the high heel wearers because we thought that if the muscle is in a shortened position then you are loading it less and the muscle volume should be smaller”.

In the next step the length of muscle fiber of the calf muscle was measured and it was found out that the muscle fibers of ladies who wear heels were 13% shorter than that of those who wear flat shoes. Thus it was found out that the consistent wearing of heels shortens the muscle fiber of calf muscles and that why women faces problem when they try to wear flat shoes. This finding doesn’t suggest that  women should completely avoid wearing heels, but if some stretching exercises are done along with that then this problem may not arise.
