What is Synringoma?

It is a non- Cancerous form of Tumor that may develop in the Sweat Glands. The term Syringoma is derived from Greek word “Syrinx”, which means tube. This refers to the Tube shaped Sweat Glands that leads to the growth of Tumor.

Occurrence of Syringoma

This condition may occur accidently due to Somatic or Germline Mutations. In many cases, this mutation is found to be inherited as a dominant trait. About 10 cases are reported in English people.

This disorder may affect the Adolescent and the Preadolescent people of both sexes. This disorder mostly affects the Facial area.

Types of Syringoma

According to the Friedman and Butler’s classification, Syringome is classified in to following 4 types, including:

  • A Familial type
  • A Localized type
  • A type related to Syndrome
  • A generalized type including Eruptive and multiple Syringoma

Symptoms of Syringoma

Following are the symptoms of this disorder

  • This disease is identified with the occurrence of small, Yellow Papules found on the Skin.
  • These Papules can be easily seen with the Naked Eye and are Cystic in the nature. The Lesions of this syndrome have diameter of about 1 to 3 Millimeter in size.
  • The Lesions are soft to touch and are mostly found on the area of Cheeks, Eyelids but they may also occur on the body areas including:
  • Umbilicus
  • Vulva
  • Armpits
  • Forehead
  • Abdomen
  • Chest
  • Nodules may also appear on the Skin in an Eruptive form, which is identified as Multiple Syringoma Lesions.
  • These Lesions may spread to the other parts of Skin but eruptive Syringomas mostly occur on the Chest and Penile tube being Hyperpigmented Papules.
  • Nodules are mostly not painful and may not lead to other discomforts.
  • Lesions emerge in this disorder makes difficult to apply the make-up and attract attention of other people.
  • Small Nodules are not prominent and other people may not notice them unless they are standing very close the patients.

Causes of Syringoma

The causes of this condition are not exactly known but some people get them and some may not.

According to its susceptibility, the causes of Syringoma may include

  1. Over production of Sweat Glands

    People who sweat a lot, who have active sweat glands may suffer from this disorder.

  2. Adolescence

    This disorder can easily affect the people in their adolescence and preadolescence as compare to other people. This reason of this disorder is that Sweat and Hormone glands are really active in this age of life that may lead to this disease.

  3. Underlying Diseases

    People with underlying diseases including Down Syndrome, Marfan Syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Diabetes increases the risk for this disorder. About 18% of people affected with Down Syndrome may also suffer from Syringoma. Patients of Diabetes may suffer from Clear Cell Syringoma.

  4. Race

    People belonging to Asia and African America have more chances to suffer from this disease as compare to people from other Ethnic regions.

  5. Heredity

    Heredity may be cause of this disorder but it is not found to be a main cause in every case.

  6. Sex

    This condition is found to affect girls more as compare to boys.

  7. Skin Tone

    Skin tone plays an important role in causing this disorder because people with darker Skin tone are more affected with the condition known as Eruptive Syringoma.

Diagnosis of Syringoma

The diagnosis of Syringoma starts with the physical examination. Doctors mostly ask when the Lesions occurred on the Skin and are they painful or not. Sometimes, the doctors may take a sample of affected Skin for Biopsy.

Biopsy of the affected area may help a Pathologist to check the specific Cells for the presence and growth of this disorder, it also confirms whether it is this disease or is something else.

Differential Diagnosis of Syringoma

The differential diagnosis is done to differentiate this condition from other conditions including

  • Apocrine Hidrocystoma
  • Acne Vulgaris
  • Basal Cell Carcinoma
  • Cowden disease
  • Colloid Milium
  • Cuntaneous Tuberculosis
  • Favre-Racouchot Syndrome
  • Granuloma Annulare
  • Milia
  • Microcystic Adnexal Carcinoma
  • Multiple Pruitic Follicular Papules
  • Steatocystoma Multiplex
  • Sebaceous Hyperplasia
  • Trichoepithelioma
  • Vermiculate Atrophoderma
  • Xanthelasmas

This disorder is sometimes confused with the Xanthomas, which are lumps formed due to accumulation of Cholesterol under Skin.

Treatment of Syringoma

The treatment of this condition is required, if the patient feels uncomfortable with this situation. This condition mostly causes no pain. Most patients want to treat this condition because they want to make their physical appearance better.

Following treatments should be done for this disorder

  1. Electro – Cauterization

    This process is composed of burning of Lesions with the help of heat. An injection of Lidocaine is also injected to reduce the pain of these Lesions. Needles of Electro-Cautery are put in the Lesions to burn them.

  2. Cryo – Cauterization

    This process consists of low temperatures that freezes the growth of these Lesions and finish them. Liquid Nitrogen or any other chemical with 0 degree temperature is used for this purpose.

  3. Excision

    In this procedure the abnormal growth of Lesions is cut with the help of Scalpel, scissors or any other type of instrument.

  4. Carbon Dioxide Laser Surgery

    In this technique a pulsed dyed Laser is used along with the Carbon dioxide to remove the Lesions. It is an advanced and an expensive process. Sometimes, the growth can also be removed with the help of Erbium Laser. This Laser is used along with the Local Anesthesia.

  5. Dermabrasion

    It is a surgery in which Nodules are rubbed off from Skin with the help of brush or fine Sandpaper.

  6. Home Remedy for Syringoma

    Following are some remedies for this condition

  1. Vegetable Juice

    Cut a Potato or a Cucumber in to 2 halves and rub them on the affected Skin. Let the juice to go on the Skin and wash after 15 minutes. Try to do it 2 times in a week, you will see the result.

  2. Fruit Juice

    Fresh juice of Lemon or Apple Vinegar is good to be applied on the affected areas.

  3. Almond Oil

    Almond oil is good to massage on the affected Skin, it gives the important nutrients to the Skin.

  4. Aloe Vera Gel

    Try to wash your Skin regularly with the Aloe Vera Gel. It is good for Skin and it helps in the removal of scars from the face.

  5. Sandal Wood Paste

    Mixture of Sandalwood, Rose Water and Milk cream also helps to improve the Skin tone and lead to removal of marks from Skin.

Progbosis of Syringoma

If treated well, these Nodules are completely removed without any scarring. Sometimes, the Nodules may occur again.

Prevention of Syringoma

No specific preventive measures are advice for this disorder. There are general preventions for this disorder. This condition cannot be avoided especially when it is inherited from family.

The general preventive measures for this disorder may include

  • Try to maintain required level of Glucose in Blood.
  • Try to maintain the Blood pressure
  • Follow a balanced diet
  • Try to avoid Salty foods
  • Avoid eating food rich in Rice
  • Try to avoid Alcohol
  • Try to avoid harmful drugs
  • Try to keep a proper Skin hygiene
  • Try to take bath daily
  • Try to wear loose dress so that Air may pass through it

People suffering from this disease should try to take avoid stress and anxiety because these elements can enhance this disease and may lead to worsening of symptoms.

Try to visit your Dermatologist regularly, he will guide you about the basic knowledge required for this disorder.

If obese people are suffering from this disorder, they should try to work out and lose some weight because it might help in improving Metabolism. An improved metabolism leads to good health of Skin and help in preventing the development of Syringoma.
