According to Australian scientists’ report, women who given estrogen (sex hormone) are less likely to suffer hallucination or delusion.

The report published in the Archives of General Psychiatry Journal on Monday and it showed that sex hormone might boost blood flow to the brain.

A UK mental health charity stated that they needed funds for bigger studies in this connection.

Some amount of estrogen is found in men’s bodies while in women it produces in much greater amount and besides other functions it helps to regulate the menstrual cycle.

The possible link between mental illness and estrogen was first identified almost a century back, but now it is being considered as a likely treatment.

More than 100 women with schizophrenia were enrolled in the study by the researchers from Monash University in Melbourne. The researchers gave a patch containing estradiol (a common form of estrogen) to half of these women

The other group was also given a patch but without any active drug and both these group kept taking their normal medication.

The feelings and symptoms were recorded on weekly basis for more than a month.

The researchers found that the group who was given estradiol had a greater improvement in their feelings and schizophrenic symptoms in that period.

The lead author Dr. Jayashri Kulkarni stated that the hormone seemed to have a rapid effect on blood circulation in the brain and on the way glucose is utilized by the brain as fuel.

The scientists believe that it is also possible that it’s possible that the longer-term effects may change the way brain cells contact to each other.
