Amnesia is a disease related to memory. It can be loss of large block of interrelated memories or a block out of a particular portion of incidents. The people suffering from amnesia finds difficult in learning and understanding newer things in life. It is a great barrier to information sharing and badly affects an individual. This condition can be temporary but it might also lead to a long term syndrome. We are mostly familiar with it in a romantic portrayal of characters in movies and television. However in reality it is quite frightening. Amnesia can occur in both the genders and also at any age.

The causes of amnesia are also widely varying. It can be an injury to the head through an accident. In this cause it may result in temporary loss of memory and an individual might bounce back to normal life as the injury heals. However amnesia caused by brain injury or damage is known as the neurological or organic amnesia. The causes of neurological amnesia might be due to stroke, long-term loss of oxygen in the brain as heart attacks, internal haemorrhages or tumours in the brain. Amnesia caused by the sudden trauma is called as the psychogenic or dissociative amnesia. Prolonged use of certain drugs might also be a cause for amnesia. Widely amnesia may be categorised into two types: “Dissociative amnesia” and “Selective Amnesia”. In dissociative amnesia, it blocks out a huge portion of the memory and sometimes might lead to total loss of memory. It is a blocking of a single event. The person suffering from amnesia may show one or all symptoms. The common symptoms are confusion, disorientation, and difficulty in recalling past events or familiar situation, difficulty in retaining knowledge, in ability to learn new things, tremors and uncoordinated movements. There is no definite treatment methodology for amnesia. If the amnesia is caused due to usage of excessive drugs then the cleansing of chemicals from the system and refrain from taking those medicines. If it is caused by accident then we need to give time for the injury to heal. Third, often, psychiatric treatment helps in pulling out a person from shock or trauma. However, this serious and stressful disease can be avoided if we practice some precautionary steps like-usage of helmet while driving two wheelers, avoid drinking excess alcohol, see doctors for any brain infections.
