Burger King to limit sodium in “Kids Meals”

Burger King Kids MealsThe world’s No. hamburger chain has announced to limit sodium in its “Kids Meals”. The move may work to change Burger King’s reputation as one of the most unhealthy food providers in the industry.

On Wednesday, Burger King announced that there would be limited amount of sodium (600 milligrams or less) in all of its kids Meals advertised to children.

McDonald’s and many other fast-food chains are already preparing children’s meals with less sodium. According to McDonald’s website, its four piece Chicken McNuggets Happy Meal, which contains caramel dip, Apple Dippers, and one percent low-fat white milk, has 570mg of sodium and 390 calories.

Smoking with obesity increases death risk 8-fold, a new study says

obesity smokingAll we know neither smoking nor obesity is healthier for us, but now the results of a new study shows that chances of early death are highest among obese smokers.

Lead author of the study, Annemarie Koster, who is an epidemiologist at the U.S National Institute on Aging, says: “Everyone knows that obesity and smoking are two well-known health risk factors and now our study suggests that smoking coupled with obesity increases the death risk.”

The both carry a considerable mortality risk, but especially smoking, Koster said.

“You can lower your death risk by losing weight, but if you lose weight as well as quit smoking, it can increase your health and decrease death risk,” she added.

Eating speed may be a Key factor related to obesity

Researchers from Osaka University examined eating habits of 3,000 people and reported it in the British Medical Journal whatever they found.

A UK nutrition expert says that problems in signaling systems that inform body to eat no more may play a role in obesity. He believes that deliberate slow down at mealtimes may affect on weight.

This new study examined the relation between eating speed, obesity and feelings of satiety. Almost half of the 3,000 people included in the study told researchers that they ate quickly.

The researchers found that people who ate quickly were 84% more likely to be overweight, and similarly women had almost a twofold risk of becoming obese.

Similarly, those who ate quickly and until satiety were three times more likely to become overweight.

Sugary snacks overcome best intentions of majority

We often choose sweet snacks, in spite of our best intentions to eat healthy food.

585 participants were asked by Dutch researcher, to choose one among four snacks including an apple, a banana, a candy bar and a molasses waffle. Half of the people vote for the apple or banana snacks.

But when actual snacks were presented, a week later, 27 percent of those who had picked the healthy one, alter to the candy bar or waffle. And more than 90 percent of those who had chosen unhealthy snacks, stuck with it. Grapefruit Juice Mixed With Drugs Could Cause Risky Interactions

Grapefruit juice could be a potential source of risky interactions if it is mixed with certain specific medications. Johns Hopkins Health Alerts has recently attempted for finding the reasons of such effects.According to this review, there are some medications which do not mix well with some specific foods. The grapefruits or the grapefruit juice is one of these. It may interact with adverse impacts if mixed with certain medications. Natural grapefruits normally contain substances which can cause activity of enzymes in the intestines and liver where the medications are processed. Such type of mix would in turn result in to risky increase of the drug level in blood.

Another risky interaction may also occur between the blood thinner ‘warfarin’ and ‘vitamin K’. This vitamin is present in several types of multi-vitamins and other supplements along with other sources. Medical effects of the ‘warfarin’ gets neutralized because of its mixing with vitamin K. it also causes high risk of blood clotting which is the main effect of ‘warfarin’.

Scientists have now been successful in identifying specific responsible chemical present in the grapefruit juice which is mainly causing the interaction on mixing. A recent research study showing such evidences has also been published in the “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition”.

“Furanocoumarins (FCs)” are the main responsible chemical compounds for such interaction, according to the scientists. It is actually a family of chemical compounds which when mixed with the grapefruit juice causes such interactive effects in human body. Scientists, in order to confirm their doubt, created grapefruit juice which was free from these FCs. This juice was then compared with the effects of the normal grapefruit juice with normal FCs.

Scientists analyzed the results of this study which involved volunteers who drank 8oz of whole grapefruit juice in addition to the administered dose of ‘felodipine’, a typical blood pressure medication. The blood concentration of felodipine was observed to be three fold higher in case of those who took 8oz of normal juice in comparison to those who took the FCs free grapefruit juice.

Scientists could conclude that the blood pressure was higher with normal juice intake and this could be a risk with low blood pressure. Researchers also feel that the findings would be further helpful in developing better understanding of drug-food interactions. Scientists further suggested that one should always follow the medication guidelines strictly preventing any chance of such drug-food interactions which could be fatal.
