Naturally born babies have better mothers’ response, American study suggests.

According to an American study, babies who born naturally get more mothers’ response to their cries than the Caesarean.

The researchers noticed more activity in brain areas that are related to emotions and motivation in the 12 new mothers who had a natural delivery.

The researchers from the Yale University say that those hormones that generate at the time of birth may be the key factor in this connection. The women who had elected to have a Caesarean were included in this study. …Click here to read more

Swedish researchers find link between fathers’ age and bipolar disorder

A new study suggests that older fathers may have children with bipolar disorder. This risk begin to increase when men are older than 29 and they get married. And it reaches at its peak when men are over 55.

Some other diseases like schizophrenia and autism are also linked with increasing parental age, but it’s a first study that suggests bipolar disorder or manic depression also has link with increasing parental age.

This Swedish study has been published in Archives of Psychiatry and it tells that ageing sperm may be a factor behind that increasing risk.

The Karolinska Institute researchers say in this connection, it involves copying DNA in the process of making sperm in men and this process is considered prone to error as men get older.

Emma Frans, who led the study, said: “Women come in this world with their full supply of eggs and that’s why DNA copy errors do not increase as women get older.”

US researchers find link in depression and poor driving.

According to a small scale US study, people who use anti-depressants may have poor driving skill.

Researchers from North Dakota University included 60 people in a driving simulation to test their concentration, reaction and steering.

They found that people who were on high dose anti-depressant courses had impaired driving skills.

But the researchers didn’t find whether it was the result of the actual condition or the pills caused those poor driving skills. According to researchers a larger study is needed to find it out.

The participants of that study were divided into three groups: Those who were on a high dose, those who were taking low dose and the people that were not on medication.

A series of common driving situations like reacting to brake lights, traffic signals and stop signs were recreated in the simulation they were put through.

The researchers will present their findings at the Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association on Monday.

According to the outcomes of the study, people who were not on medication got 69 points, people on low medication got 65 and those who were on high dose got 54.

The researchers concluded that either pills or the condition caused the problems.

Dr Holly Dannewitz who led the study told that they needed more work to do on this with a much larger study.

In UK, Depression in elderly people is neglected by NHS.

According to a charity, depression is considered a natural part of getting older and because of this misconception almost two million older people are being denied treatment for their depression.

The charity finds that over 65s when seek help for their depression, they are often fobbed off and given inappropriate treatment.

Depressed Smokers Cling to Smoking after Heart Attack

A new study shows that the smokers who develop symptoms pertaining to depression during hospitalization for a heart attack will have a harder time giving up smoking.Dr. Anne N. Thorndike of ‘Massachusetts General Hospital’ and ‘Harvard Medical School’ in Boston, the study’s lead author said that the depression is common among heart attack patients and these issues are more important to be taken into consideration before one can expect them to show improvement in quitting smoking in real terms. Thorndike further added that the depressed smokers tend to pick up the habit within four weeks thus making it more important to address these concerns at an early stage. The smokers also show a mental reluctance to show seriousness towards the efforts for reducing the risk of cardiac troubles further.

During the study, 245 smokers had been followed up who had been in the hospital due to heart attack or unstable angina. “Unstable angina” is a type of acute chest pain that occurs when your heart doesn’t get enough oxygen. It can be a warning sign of a heart attack. They were undergoing the dame treatment comprising of smoking cessation counseling and medication which included either bupropion hydrochloride, an anti-smoking medication sold as ‘Zyban’, or an inactive placebo.
