According to an American study, babies who born naturally get more mothers’ response to their cries than the Caesarean.
The researchers noticed more activity in brain areas that are related to emotions and motivation in the 12 new mothers who had a natural delivery.
The researchers from the Yale University say that those hormones that generate at the time of birth may be the key factor in this connection. The women who had elected to have a Caesarean were included in this study.
In natural birth, contractions are considered essential and they trigger the release of hormone oxytocin that is believed to play a major role in developing maternal behavior. But the release of these hormones do not trigger in a Caesarean case. The procedure is also linked to higher risk of post-natal depression.
The researchers conducted brain scans of these 12 women during the early postpartum period. Six women out of these 12 women had given birth naturally while the other six had a Caesarean.
The researchers noted the differences in only those areas of brain activity that seemed to influence mothers’ response to their child.
Dr James Swain, who led the study, said that: “our study may help to give a better understanding of the chemistry between a mother and baby’s attachment.” The study has been published in the journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry.
