These charges have been rejected by the sunscreen makers, however. The Environmental working Group (EWG) investigated almost 1,000 branded sunscreens and found that every fourth out of five either proved ineffective to protect against harmful UV rays or had some skin damaging chemicals.
Different well known brands including Coppertone, Neutrogena and Banana Boat were at top among the bad delinquents, EWG claimed in their report that has been published on their website on 2nd July.
The sunscreen industry is on thriving in America and most of the Americans use these products to save themselves from sun damage and skin cancer. More often the consumers like to choose sunscreens with a high Sun Protection Factor (SPF) that are waterproof and consider to offering “broad spectrum” protection, the authors narrated.
952 branded sunscreens were examined by the EWG researchers and they found that only 143 out of them produced very good protection results and used the ingredients that had minimum damaging risks. These assessments of EWG researchers were based on a review of many scientific studies, different models of sunscreen effectiveness and government, academic and industry databases that was collected regarding toxicity and regulatory information.
The reports showed that among 41 sunscreens of the market leader Coppertone none met the criteria for protection and effectiveness settled by EWG. While among 103 of Banana Boat and Neutrogena products only 1 is in EWG’s suggested list.
However EWG’s claim has been rejected by the spokespersons from makers of Coppertone, Banana Boat and Neutrogena as they stated that their products had to undergo very vital testing.
According to Julie Lux of Schering-Plough all Coppertone products are routinely evaluated by many independent dermatologists and scientist for their protection and effectiveness.
