US couldn’t meet No-Smoking targets for 2010

No-SmokingA CDC report shows that around 20 percent adults smoked last year that was far short of government objective of 12 percent.

Experts at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that the US wouldn’t succeed to meet its Healthy People 2010 objective of decreasing the adult smoking rate to 12% or less.

Several CDC studies, released on Thursday, seem to suggest that this failure means high levels of smoking-related health issues, deaths and productivity lost.

In US, smoking is counted for a leading cause of preventable death and disease; however, inclusive tobacco control programs can prevent millions of premature deaths in the country.

Smoking with obesity increases death risk 8-fold, a new study says

obesity smokingAll we know neither smoking nor obesity is healthier for us, but now the results of a new study shows that chances of early death are highest among obese smokers.

Lead author of the study, Annemarie Koster, who is an epidemiologist at the U.S National Institute on Aging, says: “Everyone knows that obesity and smoking are two well-known health risk factors and now our study suggests that smoking coupled with obesity increases the death risk.”

The both carry a considerable mortality risk, but especially smoking, Koster said.

“You can lower your death risk by losing weight, but if you lose weight as well as quit smoking, it can increase your health and decrease death risk,” she added.

The study has been published in the November issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Smokers should get vaccine – panel says

vaccineATLANTA – A government panel has recommended vaccination especially for smokers, for the very first time. The panel decided that, smokers under 65 should get pneumococcal vaccine.

The shot is already recommended for adults aged 65 or older and provides protection against pneumonia, meningitis and other illnesses.

Studies have already proven that smokers higher degree than nonsmokers to suffer pneumococcal disease. Also, the number of cigarettes someone smokes each day is directly proportional to odds of developing illnesses.

The reason for, why smokers are highly susceptible is not exactly known. But some scientists believe, because smoking cause damage to lung which provide bacteria an atmosphere to attack lungs and trachea (windpipe).

Pneumococcal infections are top killer among vaccine-preventable diseases. It’s an advanced complication of influenza, specifically in the elderly. It is also responsible for, around 36,000 deaths per year.

Smoking rate, in college students is higher than ever

TUESDAY, Sept. 9 – One out of five, U.S. college students have started smoking, but college and university management need to take a strong action against tobacco industry marketing strategies to stop growing rate of student smoking, a new American Lung Association report finds.

“Colleges and universities are responsible to provide safe and sound environment in which their students can study. This should include an atmosphere free of smoking and tobacco advertisements that persuade young adults to use harmful tobacco products,” Bernadette A. Smoking during pregnancy has links to Baby’s low birth weight

According to a study in the latest Medical Journal of Australia, teenage moms who smoke during pregnancy their babies are more likely to suffer from low birth weight (LBW) than the moms who don’t smoke.

Associate Professor Elizabeth Sullivan and Denise Chan from the University of New South Wales analyzed the link between smoking in pregnant teenagers and baby birth weight. They discovered though smoking throughout pregnancy increased the risk of LBW, the babies of mothers who gave up smoking 20 weeks before gestation had birth weights almost same to babies born to non-smokers.

LBW is a basic indicator of a newborn’s overall health and also affects childhood development and predisposes children to chronic disease later in life. Decreasing the quantity of cigarettes smoked during pregnancy also affects the risk of LBW in infants. The authors state “Our results suggest that there is further scope to decrease smoking in pregnancy in teenage mothers,”.
