Mounting HIV rates among drug users

Researchers find a considerable increase in HIV infection among injecting drug users.

A report that has been published in the British medical journal The Lancet shows that almost 3 million self-injecting drug users in the world are HIV-positive.

HIV travel ban – still in pending after approval

WASHINGTON - Experts at an international AIDS conference held in Mexico City assigned a value to United States for reversing a 15-years-old law, prohibiting HIV-positives from entering the country.

President Bush has signed that act into law since two months, his management has not taken any step yet, required to put the signed law into practice, and legislatives and advocacy groups are wondering what is going on.

“We write to encourage you to act quickly to remove HIV from the list of communicable diseases of public health significance and end the HIV travel and immigration ban,” Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Gordon Smith, R-Ore., main supporter of the measure in the Senate, wrote to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Michael Leavitt last month. According to U.S. health officials report, there is an alarming increase of HIV cases among men especially young one who have sex with men.
The term that has been used for these people by Public health experts is “men who have sex with men” or MSM as several among them neither homosexual nor even bisexual.

According to a report from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, It has been noted that during 2001 to 2006, the largest HIV transmission group in the U.S was male-to-male sex group.

Senate reaches a tentative deal on worldwide AIDS bill

The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief was suggested with $15 billion in funding at the time of its creation five years back. Now the extension of the plan suggested $50 billion more to control HIV and AIDS in many countries of the world. Due to concerns over increased spending, seven Republican senators led by Tom Coburn had stalled that plan.

New Strategies to Curtail High STD Rate among Adolescent Girls

During the 2008 National STD Prevention Conference in Chicago , the researchers at ‘Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’ presented a paper pointing out to an alarming increase in large number of cases of teenaged girls and adolescent women being infected by sexually transmitted infections. It also stressed upon on addressing the prevention of these diseases as an important public health goal.

The paper was based on an investigation of data reported in the ‘2003-04 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey’ done among a sample of 14- to 19-year-old girl participants. It was found that approximately one-fourth of this population sample was infected by at least one of the sexually transmitted infections, the maximum number of instances reported in the case of human papillomavirus. Other major infections were reported for the infections like ‘Chlamydia Trachomatis’ and ‘Trichomonas Vaginalis’. A small chunk of this group was also had herpes simplex virus type II and the one infected by STD had more than one infections. It reported about 1 in 4 female adolescents being infected by at least one sexually transmitted infection.

This combination is used to repress the HIV virus and stop the progress of the disease. With this latest therapy of treating HIV & AIDS patients, there has been a drop in the death rates and reduced suffering also. Of course this drug has to be taken very regularly and any break in treatment will create a massive set back. Children and pregnant women are also given ART treatment.
