Moderate exercise can reduce high liver fat levels in diabetics, John Hopkins researchers say.

According to John Hopkins researchers, regular aerobic exercise and weightlifting may reduce high liver fat levels in patients with type2 diabetes.

High levels of fat are quite common in patients with type2 diabetes and they often seem to contribute in heart disease risk.

77 diabetic men and women took part in the study and they were divided into two groups. One group was asked to do three 45-minute sessions of moderate aerobic exercises including brisk walking and bicycling for six months. They were also asked to do three 20-minute sessions of weightlifting per week.

On the other hand, the other group was not asked to do any formal aerobic fitness or gym classes. …Click here to read more

Pre-Pregnancy Diabetes causes birth defects, a new study suggests

According to a study conducted by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, women who have diabetes before becoming pregnant are three to four times more likely  to giving birth a baby with at least one birth defect.

This is the first study of its kind that classify a wide range of birth defects that are linked with pre-pregnancy diagnosis of 1 or type2 diabetes, i.e., brain and spine defects, heart defects, oral clefts, limb deficiencies, kidney and gastrointestinal tract defects.

The research has been published in American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Lead Author of the study Dr. Adolfo Correa, who is an epidemiologist at the CDC’s National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, says in this connection “This growing link between diabetes and a lot of birth defects shows how important it is for the women to receive the best possible preconception care and particularly for those who are found with diabetes.”

Diets with low carbohydrates can work for obese diabetics

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) –Swedish researchers suggest that overweight patients with type 2 diabetes can control their weight and blood sugar for long time just by following a low-carbohydrate diet.

Food

Dr. Jorgen Vesti Nielsen told that there was a possibility to have a long-term success in treatment of some type 2 diabetic patients.

In this study, the carbohydrate intake of the patients was limited to 20 percent of their total calories and the most significant noted effect of this low-carb diet was the absence of hunger, Nielsen further added.

The decrease in food intake offers body to utilize its own stored fat as a fuel and it causes weight reduction, said Nielsen from Blekingesjukhuset diabetes clinic, in Karlshamn, Sweden.

Diabetes01Diabetes is a chronic syndrome that is characterized by disordered metabolism and inappropriately high blood sugar. Diabetes is caused by inherited and/or acquired deficiency in production of insulin by the pancreas, or by the ineffectiveness of the insulin produced. Such a deficiency results in increased concentrations of glucose in the blood. The characteristic symptoms of diabetes are excessive urine production, excessive thirst and increased fluid intake and sometimes even blurred vision.

Type I or Juvenile diabetes is a type of diabetes that begins during childhood or adolescence. In this type of diabetes, the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Taking daily injections of insulin treats this condition. For this reason, this type of diabetes is also called insulin-dependent diabetes.
