According to newly found research results, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome i.e. CFS is caused due to childhood abuse.
Childhood abuse can be physical i.e. sexual, or emotional i.e. neglect and unjust anger towards a child.
It is reported in the January issue of ‘Archives of General Psychology’ that the people who experienced childhood abuse were 6 times more likely to counter CFS than those who fortunately didn’t.
According to a website; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s CFS cannot be treated through rest. And sadly enough, it gets worse when the patient works physically or mentally. Problem in concentrating, muscle ache and joint pain include in its symptoms.
Another abnormalcy found out by Dr. Christine Heim and her colleagues at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, is that childhood abuse caused a remarkable drop in levels of cortisol. It is a hormone which a body requires to respond to tension.
Cortisol controls the body energy metabolism during stress. This hormone also affects body immune function. Dr. Heim said in an interview that cortisol is ‘good to have during stress’.
Varied levels of cortisol can create disfunction in times of stress and strain. As stated by Heim, “It’s all about having the right balance, and childhood trauma could be more like a general risk factor that interferes with the body’s ability to maintain balance”.
It is to be noted that cortisol levels were normal in children who were treated normally through their childhood.
It too is noticeable that it was found in the study that all the patients of CFS did not necessarily face child abuse. Rests of the causes are yet to be searched.
