The world’s No. hamburger chain has announced to limit sodium in its “Kids Meals”. The move may work to change Burger King’s reputation as one of the most unhealthy food providers in the industry.
On Wednesday, Burger King announced that there would be limited amount of sodium (600 milligrams or less) in all of its kids Meals advertised to children.
McDonald’s and many other fast-food chains are already preparing children’s meals with less sodium. According to McDonald’s website, its four piece Chicken McNuggets Happy Meal, which contains caramel dip, Apple Dippers, and one percent low-fat white milk, has 570mg of sodium and 390 calories.
Recently, Burger King has been widely criticized for not putting enough focus on health and nutrition, the food chain was
among the last major fast-food purveyors to take out transfat from its food.
Michael Jacobson, who is executive director for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, says: “It sounds nice that Burger King is thinking along the lines of improving nutrition, but right now they have some saltiest and fattiest foods out there.”
During August, Jacobson’s group talked several times from fast-food chains for being loaded with salt and fat.
In US, most of the people consume more sodium than the body requires and it can increase their risk for high blood pressure, The National Institutes of Health says. According to NIH recommendation, most adults should consume less than 2,400mg per day.
